The most widely used of all herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, LICORICE ROOT is often referred to as the ‘grandfather of Chinese herbs’ and the ‘great detoxifier’. It is believed to eliminate all poisons and toxins from the body. When ingested over a period of time, licorice root is said to produce radiant health and prolong life. It builds energy and revitalises; in the Chinese medicinal system it is said to clean the energy meridians, thus enabling the smooth flow of ch’i (or life energy). Licorice root contains many anti-depressant compounds and is an excellent alternative to St. John’s Wort. It has also been used to treat coughs and sore throat, asthma and chest infections, and to relieve fevers and soothe headaches and pains. In addition it has been widely used to relieve hay fever, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma. Licorice root can help to sharpen concentration, regulate blood sugar balance, relieve abdominal pain and congestion, and benefit the functions of the abdominal organs. It has a well-documented reputation for healing stomach ulcers, and can lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion, and act as a mild laxative. Through its beneficial action on the liver, licorice root increases bile flow and lowers cholesterol levels. It also appears to enhance immunity by boosting interferon levels in the body. Licorice root can also lessen symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. For more than one thousand years, it has been employed to treat anorexia. It is widely held that licorice root builds flesh (i.e. muscle) and beautifies the countenance. In the words of the first great Chinese herbalist Shen Nung, licorice root “fortifies the sinews and bones and muscle growth, and doubles our strength; it cures swollen wounds due to wrenching and cutting, and detoxifies the blood and energy.” Licorice root is effective in relieving illness due to bad food, medicines and/or alcohol. It also has the ability to improve resistance to stress (not only physical, but mental and emotional). Licorice root is also useful in easing certain symptoms of PMS (such as irritability, bloating and breast tenderness) and can help during menopause.

SPAGYRIC TINCTURES offer a more energetically complete herb or plant extraction. These concentrated extractions contain the three essentials – that is, the body, soul and spirit – of the herb or plant, purified and recombined in an exalted medicinal form. The spagyric technique is part of the ancient initiatic tradition of alchemy – the Art that lies at the heart of the inner traditions of the West.

Ordinary herbal tinctures only partially utilise the curative powers of the plants from which they are prepared. Spagyric tinctures are made according to unique processes which ‘open’ the plant or herb and liberate stronger curative powers. The spagyric technique of confecting herbal remedies embodies another – more synergistic – way of considering Nature and its powers.

TESTIMONIALS

“Anyone interested in alchemical spagyric herbalism MUST check out what Paul Hardacre and Marissa Newell are creating! I take the Mare Maia coriander / cilantro and tumeric daily! I will never forget tasting these for the first time! Transported me back to India and the power of true alchemical healing!” – Craig Williams (Ayurvedic Acharya, Clinical Herbalist and Acupuncturist, and author of Cave of the Numinous)

“... I take spagyric tinctures of graviola leaf, sage, chamomile, garlic, and goji berry. I have found that a combination of all these in rotation two times per day yields the best results. I take garlic, goji and graviola in the morning, 10 drops each in juice. Then garlic, sage and chamomile in the evening, 10 drops each in juice. Normally, by this time of year, after rains and humidity, I would have succumbed to a progression of colds by now. This has not been the case this year, so the main function of all these in combination seems to be helping boost the immune system.”
–Aye (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

“I’ve been enjoying a cocktail of spagyric tinctures from Mare Maia over the past few weeks including garlic, sage, goji berry, German chamomile, tumeric, and coriander-cilantro. The most definitive improvement I have found is an increase in energy levels and general well being. Also the anti-inflammatory properties of the tumeric have noticeably helped with my back pain. Thanks Paul Hardacre, Marissa Newell and Balthus for all the effort that goes into the extraction process and by bringing a little alchemy to Chiang Mai!”
– Aaron Faulkner (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
